Does your lock need a mortise? If the product page has a Mortise option to choose from, or the description lists a mortise type, use this guide. Cylinder locks, rim locks and glass-door locks fit without one, so you can skip it for those.
The mortise is the lock body that sits inside the edge of your door. The right size depends on your door.
Reading the code
Each mortise has a four-digit code, for example 6085:
- First two digits = backset: the distance in mm from the edge of the door to the centre of the handle. 6085 = 60mm backset.
- Last two digits = series: the distance in mm between the handle centre and the key cylinder centre. 6085 = 85mm. Only choose codes the product offers.
Single latch options have no deadbolt. They are a simple latch for interior doors, apartments and rooms where a handle and latch is enough.

European codes: 7255 and 8570
Some locks, such as our TA-KN05 smart knob, offer European mortises. These codes are written the other way round, with the series first:
- 7255: 72mm between the handle and key cylinder centres, 55mm backset. This is the standard size in much of continental Europe.
- 8570: 85mm between the handle and key cylinder centres, 70mm backset.
Measure your existing lock as described below and match both numbers. If your door already has a 72mm or 85mm lock with the same backset, it will usually fit the existing cut-out.
How to measure
- Open the door and look at your existing lock.
- Measure from the edge of the door to the centre of the handle spindle. That is your backset.
- Measure from the handle centre down to the key cylinder centre. That is your series.
- Choose the code that matches both numbers, from the options offered on the product.

If our payment provider flags an order for a security check, we'll dispatch it once the payment has fully cleared. This can take up to 5 extra working days.
Import duties
Orders of a single item are shipped with import duties paid, so there is nothing extra to pay on delivery. If your order contains more than one item, import duties or taxes may have to be paid by you before the parcel is released from customs, and this can delay delivery.
